Most of what gets sold with copper is. Detox, immunity, energy: none of that is on this page. What is left is plain chemistry. Copper is naturally antimicrobial, which is why hospitals fit it to door handles.
I got copper because I have glass and it molds regularly. I have aluminum and it molds. I have plastic and it molds.
Glass, steel and plastic are chosen because they do nothing to water. That also means they do nothing to what grows in it. It was never your washing up. It was the material.

Fresh plain water should not. The taste threshold for copper sits at 1 to 5 mg/L. If yours tastes like a coin, it has sat too long or something acidic went in.

Copper didn't stop working. It stopped being copper.
For three thousand years a copper vessel meant a vessel made of copper. Then plating got cheap, the marketplaces filled up, and the word came loose from the metal. Today copper bottle mostly describes a colour.
Here is the economics, because it explains everything else. Forming a bottle from solid copper takes copper, which is heavy and priced daily on a commodity exchange. Electroplating a micron of copper onto a cheap steel body costs a fraction of that and photographs identically.
But bare plating tarnishes, and tarnish exposes the trick. So the maker seals the inside with a clear lacquer. That one layer does all the hiding. It keeps the bottle looking permanently new, and it guarantees the copper never touches your water. You pay for copper and you drink from film over steel.
Nobody is checking. On an imported marketplace listing the words pure copper are free to type and carry no obligation.
It still looks brand new stops being a compliment and starts being a symptom.
It is fool's gold. Identical to the eye, worthless in the hand, and the only way to know is to test it. Or think of the flat pack bookshelf with the wood-look veneer that swelled and peeled. Laminate is not timber, and a copper finish is not copper.

Anyone can type pure copper. Here is what should have to be true before you believe it.
Every listing in this category uses the same few words, and the words are free to write. So do not read them. Use a standard instead, and apply it to us and to every other seller in your open tabs.
- A magnet slides straight off it. Copper is not magnetic. Most cheap steel is. Four seconds, no cost.
- It is heavy for its size. This one is about 250 grams empty at 950ml. A plated tube feels like an empty drink can.
- It changes colour. Bare copper reacts with air and water and dulls within weeks. A bottle sealed under lacquer cannot. Permanently showroom new is a symptom, not a feature.
- The seller tells you where it was made and what it is made of, in specifics, before being asked.

A seller who will not show you the document is telling you something about the document.
Run the same three tests on the bottle already in your cupboard. That is the one you are really asking about.
It will go dark on you, and that is the receipt.
Real skin tans in the sun. A mannequin does not. A bottle that never changes was never alive.
Bare copper oxidises. It goes darker, patchier, sometimes faintly green at the seams, and it does that because air and water are reaching the metal. A bottle sealed under clear lacquer physically cannot do this, which is why the flawless ones stay flawless. The thing most people are nervous about is the one thing a fake cannot imitate.
So when yours dulls, nothing has gone wrong and you have not ruined it. Half a lemon and a spoon of salt takes the outside back to bright in about a minute, or leave it and let the thing age. Both are fine, and nobody tells you that, which is why people bin perfectly good bottles.
On safety, the honest answer is a published one. Australia's drinking water guidelines set a health figure and a separate, lower figure for taste. The table is there so you can see what the numbers actually are rather than take anybody's word for it, including ours.
The whole of the maintenance
- Plain water only. No juice, cordial, lemon or anything fizzy inside it. Acid pulls copper far faster than water does.
- Empty it overnight rather than leaving it standing for days. Standing time is the one variable you control, and it is the one that causes the green.
- Rinse and dry upside down with the lid off. Thirty seconds. This is the habit that does most of the work.
- Never the dishwasher. Detergent strips copper and leaves it blotchy.

Can I test the bottle I already own?
Please do, and do it before you buy anything from us. Run a fridge magnet down the body. If it grips anywhere, there is steel under the finish. Then feel the weight, tap it, and put a dab of vinegar and salt on the outside and wait a minute. If your existing bottle passes all four, keep it. You do not need a new bottle and we would rather tell you that than sell you one.
Does copper actually stop a bottle going mouldy?
Copper is naturally antimicrobial. That is ordinary chemistry, it is why hospitals fit copper to door handles, and it is the only thing we will say about it. A glass, steel or plastic bottle is chosen because it does nothing to water, which also means it does nothing to what grows in water left standing. We are not going to promise you a bottle that never needs a rinse. Empty it, rinse it, dry it upside down.
Mine has gone green inside. Have I ruined it?
Almost certainly not, and please do not throw it out. Copper that sits wet develops a greenish film at the seams and in the low points. That is the metal reacting with air and water, which is what bare copper does and what a lacquered one cannot do.
Half a lemon, a spoon of salt, a soft cloth, thirty seconds, rinse well. It comes back. To stop it recurring, empty it and dry it upside down with the lid off rather than leaving water standing in it for days. That one habit is most of the maintenance there is.

Why is this A$59.99 when there are copper bottles for A$25?
Because a lot of those are a steel tube with a thin skin of copper outside and a lacquer inside, and nothing on the listing tells you which ones. Some cheap ones are copper. The point is you cannot tell from a photo, and nobody at that price asks you to check.
We are also not the most expensive. The imported category leader sells at about A$113. Three of ours works out at A$36.66 each. You are paying for metal, not for marketing.
Why would I buy two or three?
Most people buy one, and one is the right answer if you are still deciding. Two exists because a bottle like this is a gift people actually use. Three exists because it is where the per bottle price drops far enough to be worth mentioning. Both ship free. There is no pressure attached to any of them and there is no timer on this page.
It's made in India. Isn't that the same cheap import?
Nearly all copper drinkware in the world is made in India, including every brand that avoids saying so. Ours is hand hammered in Uttar Pradesh and we would rather tell you that than put a flag on the box and imply the metal was worked here. Where it is made is not the variable. Whether it is solid copper or plated steel is the variable.

Can you get copper poisoning from this?
It is the right question and it has a published answer, which is why the table above is on this page. Australia's guidelines set a health figure of 2 mg/L and a lower figure of 1 mg/L for taste. A bottle is fine when what it puts into your water sits well under both. We will not put a figure for this bottle in front of you until an accredited lab has measured it, and we are not going to guess at one.
The two things that push the number up are acidic drinks and water left standing for days. Both are in your control and both are in the care list above.
Will it make my water taste like a coin?
Fresh plain water should not. Australia's guidelines put the taste threshold for copper at 1 to 5 mg/L. A metallic taste almost always comes from one of two things: something acidic went in, or water sat in it for days. Plain water, emptied daily, is the fix. If fresh plain water still tastes like a coin, tell us. That is covered by the sixty days.
Is it lined on the inside?
The manufacturer's specification does not state an interior finish, so this page does not claim one either way. Check it yourself the day it arrives. Hold it to the light: bare copper inside looks like the outside. A lacquered interior reads glassy and faintly yellow, and is often already scratched.

Won't a filter do the same job for less?
A filter takes things out of water. That is a different job and a good one. This is a vessel, and the argument for it is that the vessel is made of a metal that is hostile to what grows in standing water. If you want filtration, buy a filter. If you want to stop drinking out of plastic, this is the conversation.
Do I have to keep polishing it?
No. Polishing is a preference, not maintenance. Half a lemon and a spoon of salt takes the outside back to bright in about a minute if you want it bright. If you leave it, it darkens and stays perfectly usable. The only real maintenance is rinsing and drying it upside down, which takes thirty seconds.
Will it leak in my bag, and does it keep water cold?
The cap screws down onto a silicone washer, which is the part cheap bottles get wrong. It is not insulated, so cold water comes to room temperature over a few hours, the same as any single wall bottle. Room temperature is the traditional way to use it anyway.
What if the magnet sticks?
Then it is not what we sold you. Keep the bottle, send us a photo, and we refund you that day. If you ordered more than one, keep all of them. We would also want to know, because it would mean something went wrong upstream that we need to find and fix.
